Deck and patio cover plans with the connections plan check asks for
Decks, porches, patio covers, and pergolas are small sheet counts and still get sent back when the ledger, posts, or footings are not engineered. AllPEStamp reviews those details and seals them with a professional engineer licensed in the project state.

When a deck or cover needs a PE stamp
The residential code has prescriptive deck provisions for conventional layouts. Those provisions stop at long cantilevers, hot tubs, roofs over the deck, high snow or wind, unusual spans, and connections the tables do not show. Patio covers and pergolas attached to the house are in the same category: the building department wants the ledger and the posts designed, not sketched.
A replacement deck on an existing ledger is still new work. The review includes whether that ledger and the band it bolts to can stay.
Details that get reviewed
The engineer checks joist and beam spans, post size, footing size and depth, lateral ties where the jurisdiction requires them, and the guard and stair geometry only as it affects the structure. A patio cover adds roof dead and live load, and sometimes wind uplift, onto the same posts.
Upload the plan view, a section through the ledger, and photos of the existing band and foundation if the deck is a rebuild. Manufacturer hardware can stay if the loads on it are checked.
Seal and price
Most deck permits are a plan, a section, and a few details, plus a short calculation package. Those are the sheets that get sealed. A cover with electrical lighting is an electrical sheet only when the permit includes it.
Because the page count is low, deck stamps sit at the top of the sheet rate, $100 per sheet, unless the set is bundled with a larger house package. Smaller decks can be done in about one business day. Final pricing is confirmed after plan review.

FAQ
- Does a wood deck need an engineer?
- A simple deck that stays inside the prescriptive deck provisions often does not. You need a stamp when the span, cantilever, load, or connection is outside those tables, or when the city requires engineered drawings for the height or the attachment.
- Can you size a beam for a patio cover?
- Yes. The cover is reviewed for its own roof load and for how that load reaches the posts and the existing house. The sealed sheets show the beam, posts, and connection.
- What if the deck holds a hot tub?
- A hot tub is a concentrated load the prescriptive joist tables do not cover. The framing under it, and the footings, are engineered and sealed as part of the deck set.
- How much does a deck stamp cost?
- A typical deck is a few sheets at $100 per sheet. The live quote uses your page count. Final pricing is confirmed after plan review.
