HVAC load calculations sealed for the mechanical permit

Building departments ask for heating and cooling loads when the equipment is new, the house is an addition, or the tenant space changed. AllPEStamp reviews those calculations and seals them with a mechanical engineer licensed in the project state when the permit requires a PE.

  • Residential and small commercial load calculations
  • Equipment selection checked against the load
  • Duct layouts reviewed when they are part of the permit

What gets calculated

Residential work is usually a room-by-room heating and cooling load, an equipment selection that can meet it, and a duct layout when the permit includes new ducts. Commercial work uses the ventilation and load method the adopted mechanical code requires for that occupancy. The equipment on the drawing has to match the calculation. A nameplate that is larger or smaller than the load is a comment we clear before sealing.

An addition needs its own load and a check that the existing equipment can carry it. If it cannot, the sealed package says so and sizes the new equipment instead of stretching the old one.

What to upload

Send the floor plan with room sizes and window locations, the insulation and window values if you know them, the equipment schedule, and any duct drawing. A plan-check comment that says “provide sealed load calculations” is enough to scope a calculation-only quote.

Title 24 or other energy forms are included when they are part of the same mechanical permit and you want them in the package. Say that at intake so they are not left off the sheet count.

Seal and price

The engineer seals the calculation report and the mechanical sheets that match it. Electrical for the new unit is a separate discipline when the service or the circuit has to change.

A house load report is a short set, priced from $100 per sheet. A commercial unit replacement with a schedule and a roof plan costs more. Final pricing is confirmed after plan review. Standard turnaround is about three business days, and smaller packages can be faster.

FAQ

Does an HVAC replacement need a PE stamp?
Many cities require sealed load calculations for a new condenser, air handler, or rooftop unit, especially on additions and commercial spaces. Like-for-like equipment in a house sometimes does not. The city’s mechanical checklist is the rule.
Can you stamp calculations my contractor already ran?
Yes, after a mechanical engineer reviews them and agrees with the inputs. If the areas, insulation, or ventilation rates are wrong, the report is revised before it is sealed.
Do you size the ducts too?
When the duct layout is part of the upload or part of the scope you approve. A load-only quote does not include a new duct design unless you ask for it.
How much do sealed load calculations cost?
The live quote is priced by sheet count, from $100 per sheet down to $25 per sheet. A residential report is usually a few pages. Final pricing is confirmed after plan review.
