Retaining wall calculations and details for the permit
Short landscape walls sometimes stay under a local height limit. Taller walls, walls with a surcharge, and walls holding a driveway or a building do not. AllPEStamp reviews the wall and seals the calculations with a professional engineer licensed in the project state.
- Concrete, masonry, and timber retaining walls
- Height, surcharge, and drainage checked together
- Calculations sealed with the wall section
- Engineer licensed in the project state

When a retaining wall needs engineering
Many cities allow a short wall, often around four feet from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, without a stamped design. That exemption disappears when the wall is taller, when a slope, driveway, or foundation sits on the high side, or when the city has a lower cutoff. A series of terraced walls is reviewed as a system when they are close enough to load each other.
Segmental block systems often have their own manufacturer charts. Those charts are not a stamp for your surcharge and your soil. The engineer uses them only when the site matches the chart’s assumptions.
Soils, surcharge, and drainage
Wall design depends on the soil it holds. If the jurisdiction wants a soils report, include it with the upload. Without one, the engineer will say whether a conservative assumption is acceptable in that city or whether a report has to come first. We seal the wall that uses those parameters. We do not write the geotechnical report.
The section shows the drainage behind the wall and where that water goes. A wall detail with no outlet is a common plan-check comment, and it is checked before the sheet is sealed.
Seal and price
A single wall is a plan, a section, and the calculations. That set is sealed together. A wall that is really a grade change across the lot belongs with the grading plans and should be quoted with them.
Pricing follows sheet count, from $100 per sheet down to $25 per sheet. Most single walls are small sets and can be done in about one business day. Final pricing is confirmed after plan review.

These are the seals this kind of permit usually asks for. The quote lists only the sheets you upload.
FAQ
- How tall can a retaining wall be without a PE stamp?
- It depends on the city. A common cutoff is four feet measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, and surcharges remove the exemption even under that height. Send the city and the height and we will tell you whether a stamp is required.
- Do I need a soils report first?
- Some jurisdictions require one before they will accept a wall design. If you already have a report, upload it. If you do not, intake will tell you whether the project can proceed on stated soil values or needs a report before sealing.
- Can you stamp a block-wall layout from the manufacturer?
- Yes, when the layout is checked against your height, surcharge, and soil, and the engineer takes responsible charge of that check. A catalog page alone is not a site-specific seal.
- How much does a retaining wall stamp cost?
- A typical single wall is a few sheets at $100 per sheet. The live quote uses your page count. Walls combined with grading are priced on the full civil set.
